The Alliance System in the Syrian Conflict

The Syrian conflict is one of the most complex war scenarios of the 21st century, characterized by a multiplicity of actors and the constant reshaping of alliances. This study examines how groups were coordinated among the various actors involved —the Syrian government, rebel groups, Kurds, jihadists— and external supporters: Russia, Iran, the United States, Türkiye, and the Gulf monarchies. Across three distinct stages, it is observed how coalitions evolved in response to changes in the balance of power on the ground and the strategic priorities of each actor. The pragmatism and flexibility of these groups reflect a transition in the world order, where geopolitical interests take precedence over ideological affinities.
