The maritime dispute between Kenya and Somalia. Its implications for Public International Law.

On October 12, 2021, the International Court of Justice issued its final ruling in the case "Maritime Delimitation in the Indian Ocean (Kenya vs. Somalia)". As a result, the division of the extended continental shelf between two adjacent states beyond 200 nautical miles was assumed. On one hand, Somalia claimed that its maritime boundary had extended in a diagonal line to the southeast, south of the Kiunga Sea. On the other hand, Kenya argued that the territorial edge had extended eastward in parallel with the equator. Despite the discrepancies, the Court ruled in favor of Somalia. The decision established important rules that could have repercussions in other possible future international disputes, in relation to Treaty Law and the Law of the Sea, as a consequence of the increasingly evident globalization of the contemporary world.
