Abstract

This article provides a brief characterization of the situation of the Democratic Party of the United States of America (U.S.) in the year following the 2024 presidential elections. Through the analysis of official, academic, and journalistic sources, it broadly examines the political, economic, and social factors that have influenced the party’s evolution after its electoral defeat to the Republican Party in that year. The study argues that the erosion of support among sectors of the electorate that traditionally backed the Democrats, internal contradictions between factions within the party, and a lack of leadership are factors that negatively affect its internal condition. It also takes into account the broader political context in the U.S. over the past decade, including rising polarization, a crisis of the democratic model, and the growing disconnection between voters and their representatives. These factors have further limited the Democratic Party’s ability to present a solid and effective alternative to Republican dominance. As a result, although the party maintains its corresponding share of influence within the system, it faces a crisis of identity, lack of strategy, and communication shortcomings ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, making it necessary to renew its discourse and redefine its project in order to reconnect with the electorate.
