Abstract

This article aims to demonstrate how the relations between South Africa and Japan were built from their foundations through the articulation of mutually beneficial interests. The ties between both nations faced diverse obstacles throughout the 20th century, related to the hardening of the ethno-racial policies of the whites South African settler regime, especially its Afrikaner branch, the architect of apartheid. However, the bonds between the two countries were strengthened through economic pragmatism that endured difficult moments, mainly in the context of the struggle against apartheid. The text reconstructs the main turning points that have characterized this historical relationship up to the present day.
