Biden and his energy policy: a break with tradition?
Keywords:

This research assesses the energy policy of the United States under the administration of Joseph Biden in the period from January 2021 to September 2024. To do so, it examines the evolution of the measures in this area adopted by different administrations, mainly those of Barack Obama (2009-2017) and Donald Trump (2017-2021). It is highlighted that American nation has historically been dependent on fossil fuels, which has generated significant environmental problems. Over time, various governments have implemented policies to regulate and diversify energy sources. The creation of agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency are examples of this. The oil crisis in 1973 prompted significant changes towards alternative energies, although, in the following decades, the focus shifted towards deregulation, especially under the presidential periods of Ronald Reagan and Trump, who prioritized the domestic production of fossil fuels. Biden, upon taking office in 2021, set out to reverse these regressive policies and focus his administration on sustainability and compliance with international commitments such as the Paris Agreement. The document concludes that current energy policy has sought to reestablish US leadership in the transition to clean energy, and that it has faced both internal and external challenges in a changing global context.
