Bolivia and its sovereign access to the sea

Abstract

The litigation between Bolivia and Chile began 136 years ago, with the violation of the territorial limits by Chile, which caused discontent for Bolivia and later, the signing of an agreement for the common benefit of these nations. We will see how this agreement triggered the so-called War of the Pacific between Bolivia and Peru against Chile (the main aggressor), which resulted in the loss of Bolivian and Peruvian territories; thus, Bolivia was left without a Mediterranean. For this reason, the Bolivian government has developed, since then, ways of understanding with its neighboring country to obtain a sovereign outlet to the sea.
