Contemporary extractivism in Africa: sustainable mining or green grabbing?

This study analyzes the activities of the most relevant international actors involved in contemporary extractivism in Africa and their impact on regional economic sovereignty, with the objetive of determining whether the rhetorical discourses about sustainable mining and green capitalism constitute a form of green grabbing. Through the analysis of concepts such as extractivism and green grabbing, the strategies of the United States, the European Union, China, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates are evaluated. The main findings reveal that, while these powers promote discourses of sustainable development and energy transition, their practices reproduce neocolonial dependency dynamics. Likewise, far from promoting local industrialization, value chains are concentrated outside Africa, and local communities suffer displacement. It is concluded that sustainable mining operates as a pretext that legitimizes large-scale extraction, exacerbating the continent's subordination in the global economy and worsening local socioeconomic precarity, thus characterizing the phenomenon more as green grabbing than as genuine development.
