The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in Asia Pacific geopolitical dynamics

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the international system has been characterized by the consolidation of Asia Pacific as the new center of global economic gravity. This shift from the Atlantic to the far east of the planet has ultimately defined new power relations and an intense race for greater zones of influence between the United States and China. Hence, U.S. foreign policy, with a relevant point since Obama's tenure, has focused on maintaining its presence in the region and minimizing Beijing's influence. However, it has not been able to contain China's prominence in the area to any great extent, in a context where regional WTO+ agreements such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) have emerged. The mega-agreement has led to a reconfiguration of the balance of power on the Asian continent. While for the United States it represents a threat to its hegemony, for China it is a mechanism for strengthening its leadership and relations with neighboring countries. In this sense, the RCEP is evidence of a reversal of U.S. supremacy in the world economic order, in the current scenario of intersystemic transition. With this in mind, the present research aims to analyze the impact of the RCEP on the geopolitical competition between China and the U.S. during the period 2020-2024.
