The impact of Covid-19 on CARICOM economies (2019- 2023)

The economies of the countries that make up the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are highly dependent on the behavior of the world market. They are characterized by high structural vulnerability, lack of financing, low productivity, high levels of indebtedness and low resilience to natural disasters. The COVID19 pandemic not only exacerbated these adverse economic conditions, but also revealed a certain degree of internal fragmentation in CARICOM, already present in the years prior to the health crisis. However, this period marked a turning point, as the pandemic prompted a revaluation of regional alliances as a strategy to face the economic and social challenges imposed by the crisis. In this context, the strengthening of regional unity becomes a key element in promoting effective measures to stimulate economic recovery and revitalization in the post-pandemic phase.
